Switzerland vs. Estonia: who could be number 22 and 23?

Angelo PalmeriComment

Magnus Pehrsson has notified a list of 21 players to travel to Lucerne for the upcoming European Qualifiers game on the 27th of March, Switzerland-Estonia.

The Estonian FA press release specified that this list will be enlarged Saturday evening to 23 squad members.

he additional call-ups will probably be notified soon after the Premium Liiga week 3 will have taken place.

The initial list of 31 players (excluding Raio Piiroja who will be called only for his farewell game against Iceland on the 31st of March) included, among the goalies, Pavel Londak; in defence, Alo Bärengrub, Markus Jürgenson and Artur Pikk; in midfield/forward, Joel Lindpere, Igor Subbotin, Sander Puri, Kaimar Saag and Vladimir Voskoboinikov.

WHO COULD BE NUMBER 22 and 23?

Many Estonian media outlets have indicated as the most probable candidate, former Banik Ostrava attacking midfielder, Joel Lindpere.

The 33-year-old international has signed a contract with Nõmme Kalju on deadline day, however, he has not played a game with the Pink Panthers yet in his nr.20 jersey.

I personally see it hard Magnus Pehrsson shall opt to bring him to Switzerland for several reasons.

Lindpere does not play a competitive game since the 28th of November, when he played 64’ minutes in a goalless draw away to FK Teplice (transfermarkt.de).

After that, he did not enter the pitch any longer and eventually decided to leave the club and return to Estonia.

He recently said in an interview to Õhtuleht that, after each training, he goes under physio to cure himself. Lindpere signing with Kalju was actually a big surprise since Joel always confessed that he doesn’t like to play on artificial turf (Kalju will play all the 2015 season on Hiiu Stadium’s artificial) as it’s the source of all his pains.

Magnus Pehrsson was in Paide where Lindpere did not debut (a week earlier, against Tammeka at home, the paperwork was not completed yet).
What could have he seen eventually about Lindpere to draw conclusions? Not much apart from the fact that the player has been standing since November nad had just 10 trainings with Kalju (his own words to Õhtuleht).

Would a game against the semi-pro/amateur team of Viljandi Tulevik make the difference? I hardly believe.

He claims to be an experienced international that is always useful to have along, and this is probably the only card he can play at this moment of the season.

On the other hand, we have a candidate who can match both the experience and the fact of having been more active during pre-season: Sander Puri.

Albeit a small injury, Puri was back on the bench in Sligo’s 3-2 loss at Drogheda United and played the last 7 minutes (4 plus 3 of added time).
He was one of the main protagonists of Sligo’s pre-season and he might get his call just before Sligo Rovers play Derry City on Saturday evening (21:45 Estonian time).

However, he is not the only player Pehrsson might opt for.

Vladimir Voskoboinikov has returned to Estonia and back to his scoring record with two goals in two games and also one assist for Kimbaloula in the 3-0 win against Paide.

A bit further lay Kaimar Saag (excluding the brace in the Estonian Supercup against the Santos Tartu amateurs, he still not on the scorecard in Premium Liiga with Levadia) and Igor Subbotin (getting experience under the belt at Mlada Boleslav but with little playing time - just 6 minutes in Synot Liga coming from the bench).

With three goalkeepers already nominated, Pavel Londak does not stand a chance to be the nr.23, therefore the choice for a nr.23 be in the defence line.

Artur Pikk has been suffering an injury since the Estonian Supercup, whereas Alo Bärengrub has lost his starting place at Nõmme Kalju.
Markus Jürgenson is left as the only serious candidate in the role for the 23rd place.
Unless Pehrsson will pick it also from the midfield/forward list of remainders.

As Estonians say, 'laupäeva õhtuks oleme targemad', Saturday even we will know more.
