Competition at Viking for a place as central defender tightens up since the Stavanger club will be testing US Anthony Soares, an American player with Italian passport.
He has joined the squad today in the Spanish training camp in La Manga.
‘We have checked this player very carefully,’ told Viking sport director to Norwegian press ‘I will be surprised if he’s not good enough for us.’
Born in 1988, Soares has played in MLS at New England Revolution (100 games) but now he’s free agent.
He was linked with with Serie A club, Hellas Verona but no deal was reached.
‘He is all-round player,’ added the club official ‘he is good both technically and tactically and he is good in the air.’
If he will convince Viking, the fight for two places will be with Karol Mets, Indridi Sigurdsson (from Iceland) and the local boy, Rasmus Martinsen. Of the three, Sigurdsson is the one who is hinted at having a safe place in the starting XI, therefore the 'fight' might be reserved for the remaining three.
According to local Norwegian football observers, Viking are in need of a striker, however they are keeping concentrating on central defenders.
Season will start on the 6th of April when Viking will travel to Mjoendalen.
