In a long interview to ‘O Planeta Deportivo’ (ODP) Nõmme Kalju central defender, Jorge Rodrigues spoke extensively about his career.
The start in Portugal; the unachieved dream of playing in Portuguese top-flight compensated with a protagonist role in Estonia and the adventure in the Champions League qualifiers in 2013 that marked another history landmark for Nõmme Kalju.
Rodrigues confessed that it was because of Hidetoshi Wakui that he is currently in Estonia since 2011. ‘I was in Thailand on trial,’ tells Jorge to ODP ‘Toshi was my colleague and friend at Nova Gorica (his club in Slovenia –edit), he was already in Tallinn and contacted me.’ Wakui invited Rodrigues to reach Estonia since Kalju were looking for a player with his qualities. ‘I didn’t know anything about this country,’ says Jorge who preferred to leave Bangkok and its chaos to head towards the much quieter Baltic capital.
Jorge has recently extended his contract for one additional year (until end of 2015) and he is 32 years old. Time for thinking what to do when the boots will be hanged.
The Portuguese centre back has clear ideas. ‘Never say never but I have no intention to return to Portugal to play football,’ confesses Jorge ‘I have a position and admiration for Kalju fans who are making me feel part of the club and I want to end my career with those who gave me a lot. However, if there is a good proposal for me and the club, I will evaluate it.’
Meanwhile, we will hear the ‘Joooorge! Jorge Rodrigues’ chant after the ‘Heartbeat’ tv series tune for a little while more.
