With the Midsummer break and some of the Premium Liiga clubs (Levadia, Nõmme Kalju and Sillamäe) preparing the upcoming European clashes, we take advantage to have a look at what was Premium Liiga in June in the three matchdays that brought us until the 21st with a slightly changed table situation.
On the resume after the national team break (you can read a balance of that period connected with Premium Liiga) Flora received Kalju in a hot derby that staged the biggest attendance of the Premium Liiga this season with almost 3,000 people attending. Great show also from the Flora fans, stained by the presence of nazi symbolism in their sector, a topic ‘Rumori’ has been engaging with in the past weeks..
Talking about the football (you can find a full match report by Chris Johns here), Flora managed to score a goal in the very late minutes of the game with Irakly Logua back to his top form. It was a disappointing loss for Kalju who showed little across the 90 minutes and lost the top of the table in favour of Flora themselves losing their second seasonal game.
Kalju’s loss gave chance to Levadia to finally close the gap with the 2013 runners-up.
It was another disappointing result for Igor Prins, the second loss in a row and the second time Kalju had to surrender in a city derby this season.
Kalju only managed to recover in a tie at Lokomotiv (1-3) after suffering the unexpected disadvantage (matchday 17) with Quintieri back on the scoresheet in Premium Liiga after 7 months, 1 week and 4 days.
Levadia were on a roll scoring 16 goals in 2 games against Tammeka (matchday 15) and Kalev (matchday 16).
The two games gave a chance to Vladislav Ivanov to rise as Levadia and Premium Liiga topscorer.
Behind the top3, Sillamäe has tried to keep the pace with alternate results: the easy win in Narva (4-1, matchday 15) was followed by an incredible 3-3 draw at FC Infonet (matchday 16, match report here) and a home loss to Levadia (matchday 17) that has increased the gap with the 2013 Champions to 7 points same as FC Infonet.
With the European ties approaching, the distance might mark the end of any hope for Sillamäe to fight for the title after the initial great start (they are 9 points from tableleader Flora).
FC Infonet have definitely stabilized in the top5 having 13 points clear of Paide Linnameeskond. It’s the confirmation that Puśtov side has definitely grown from a drop-zone role. If too early to talk about any chance for the title, the young side (23,4 years old the average age) can certainly hang around in the top5 and, who knows, be there is any of the big 4 will drop points and positions. On the resume they will receive Nõmme Kalju in a paramount clash for the title race with Kalju travelling back from a complicated trip to Iceland. Kassim Aidara is back on the scoresheet and has offered very interesting performances who earned him a couple of appearances in our 'Best XI'.
In the drop zone, Paide have completely vanished the gap with Narva Trans as now the Central Estonia side is just three points ahead of Trans, who, on their hand, were unable to take over. They lost two of the three June games and remarkably one against Kalev (3-1, matchday 17, report here).
Kalev unexpected win against the Eastern Estonia side (their third in the overall season count) helped the Tallinn’s side to rise above Tammeka and leave the play-off spot (9th place). For how long, it will more depend on Tammeka than on Kalev.
Trans, Kalev and Tammeka are all gathered in 5 points, a situation that might suggest they will battle for salvation until the very end of the season.
Desperate situation for Lokomotiv: 3 points the overall seasonal tally and they never tasted the joy of a win. After the second coach left (Tikhomirov was appointed in April), their season is quite unlikely to have any relevant turn even though they have been receiving interesting loan backups from Sillamäe (a midfielder) and Levadia (a defender).
We have witnessed everything in football, however Lokomotiv managing to save themselves would definitely enter the top10.
