Second start of the season for Sergei Zenjov at Blackpool FC as the ‘Tangerines’ took on Shrewsbury Town for the Capital One Cup (the sponsored name of the Football League Cup).
Zenjov started on the left flank as on Saturday when Blackpool FC debuted in Nottingham (2-0 loss).
It was almost the same XI except for MacMahon and Daniels not in the XI for new signing (just confirmed today!) Rentmeister and Spanish Oriol.
Zenjov entered into the notebooks on 23’ minutes when he had a good ball and earned a corner kick.
However Shrewsbury, against all odds (they are a League Two club, same level as the one Sander Puri was playing last season at York City FC) took the upper hand over Blackpool and managed to score the lead on 32’ minutes with former Tangerine striker, Scott Vernon just recently signed by Shrewsbury.
Quite curiously, the Shropshire club has been in a similar situation as Blackpool this season having even less players in their squad few weeks before the season started: just 5!
The first half ended on the same result and Zenjov was replaced with Ishmael Miller in the interval.
Notwithstanding the gap that should be existing between the two sides, Shrewsbury lead was deserved and could have been larger. According to local BBC commentators (who mistakenly quoted Zenjov as having played in Russian top-flight – he did play in the Ukrainian one) 'he is still trying to get impact in English football'.
This was Zenjov’s fourth game under his belt in England, after two friendly games and the debut last weekend.
While the Capital One Cup game is still ongoing as we write, on the 16th of August Blackpool FC will debut home against Blackburn Rovers.
