In the fifth edition of the European paper you can read about the best moments from this week’s “El Clasico”, the troubles in Dortmund, the end of Marseille’s streak, as well as the best moments from Eredivisie and the Russian Premier League.
Spanish Primera Division (Liga BBVA)
After round 9 in Spain we have huge mess at the top of the table, but also changes at the bottom. The match that everyone anticipated between Real Madrid and Barcelona showed why Spanish league is one of the best in the world. The derby showed excellent football, many chances and ultimately, a big win in a dominant display for Real Madrid. Neymar opened the scoring in the 4th minute, but then Ronaldo from penalty, Pepe, and Benzema completely turned the score around handing the Blaugrana their first defeat of the season (you can see the highlights of the match below). In the other matches, Sevilla beat Villareal to keep pace with Barca, Atletico Madrid struggled against Getafe, but got away with the three points, while Valencia got back to the winning ways with the 3:1 win over Elche.
As we mentioned before, after this round there is a huge mess at the top of the table. Barcelona and Sevilla lead with 22 points, Real Madrid is immediately behind them with 21, while Valencia and Atletico Madrid follow closely with 20 points from 9 games.
Cristiano Ronaldo added one more goal to his tally to reach 16 goals in only 9 matches, Neymar now has 9, Carlos Bacca from Sevilla is tied with Messi at the third position with 7 goals in 9 matches. He certainly finds himself in a very good company there.
Rounds 8 in the Bundesliga didn’t bring many changes at the top of the table, but it was remarkable for the fact that Borussia Dortmund suffered their 4th defeat in a row which brought them to the alarming 15th position on the table. Bayern Munich were held to their third draw in the derby against Möenchengladbach, thanks mainly to the outstanding performance of their goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer. Wolfsburg continued their fine form with the 4th consecutive win, this time over Mainz with convincing 3:0. Roberto Di Mateo suffered his first defeat since he took over at Schalke as his team lost to Bayer Leverkusen with the stunning free-kick from Hakan Calhanoglu (video below). However, the best match was played in Frankfurt, where the home team lost to VfB Stuttgart with amazing 4-5.
After round 9 we have Bayern at the top of the table with 21 points, followed by a trio of clubs Borussia Möenchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim, all of them with 17 points. At the bottom nothing new. Werder are still stuck on the 18th place with 4 points, Freiburg has 5 and Hamburger SV only 6 points after 9 matches. One position above them are Jürgen Klopp’s side who has to change something if they are about to go back to the winning ways. However, that task will be extremely hard as they are facing the reigning champions Bayern Munich this Saturday at Allianz Arena.
French Ligue 1
Round 11 in Ligue 1 saw the leaders Marseille being halt by former champions Lyon for only second defeat for Bielsa’s side this season. PSG used their mistake and even though they couldn’t count on Ibrahimovic and Cavani, they easily beat Bordeaux with 3:0. St.Etienne recorded their second win in a row with the narrow 1:0 against Metz, while the biggest win of the round went to Nice who beat Guingamp with astonishing 2:7 in a match in which the Brazilian Carlos Eduardo scored 5 goals.
The loss was kind of a setback for Bielsa and his squad as now they have only 4 points advantage over Paris SG who are second with 21. Lyon follows closely with 20, same as St Etienne on the 4th position. On the other side of the table Guingamp are at the bottom with only 9 points, one less than Evian TG, Bastia and Lorient.
Andre-Pierre Gignac still leads the way with 10 goals in 11 matches. Lacazette is second with 8, while Ben Yedder is now joint third with Carlos Eduardo from Nice.
The 10th round in the Netherlands didn’t bring any surprises. PSV beat Utrecht with 1:5 to keep their advantage over Ajax who also didn’t have any problems against G.A. Eagles. The team of Feyenoord made a breakthrough to the third position after their narrow win away at Cambuur. The early surprise Zwolle are slowly losing their breath as they failed to win for a third consecutive game after being held to a 2:2 draw at home with Heerenveen.
As we said before, PSV still tops the table with 24 points, four more than their bitter rivals Ajax and seven more than Feyenoord and Zwolle on the third and fourth position, respectively. At the bottom Heracles are still struggling with only 3 points from 10 matches. Dordrecht are not much better as they managed to collect 5 points in the first 10 rounds. Above them are Breda and the improving side of Den Haag with 10 points.
Kramer from Den Haag and Uth from Heerenveen share the top scoring position with 8 goals, followed by a larger number of players that all have 6 goals.
Russian Premier League
Exciting 11th round in the Russian Premier League as Zenit again created advantage over CSKA before their clash at Luzhniki Stadium this Saturday. AVB’s side showed class against Mordovia Saransk, sending 5 pieces past their goalkeeper. CSKA, as we mentioned slipped two points against Ufa after an exciting 3:3 draw. Rubin Kazan recorded their third consecutive win with an impressive 0:2 win against a strong Dynamo Moscow side, while Krasnodar kept their good form with a 2:0 win over Terek Grozni.
Zenit enters the 12th round with 29 points, 4 more than CSKA Moscow. Krasnodar is third with 21, Kuban follows with 20 etc. At the other side of the table, Arsenal Tula are still winless after 11 rounds with only 2 points. FK Rostov are one position above them with 5 points, Torpedo Moscow have 6 while Amkar and Ural share the last relegation position with 10 points each.
Hulk joined Rondon and Natcho at the top of the table with 7 goals as they are closely followed by Doumbia and Dzyuba with 6 goals.
